Before You Begin – Important Notes

• Cocochoco Onyx should only be applied to hair in good or reasonably healthy condition.
• If the hair is severely damaged due to bleaching, excessive lightening, or other harsh chemical treatments, the procedure is not recommended.
• In such cases, prioritise a restorative treatment plan before attempting the straightening process. Suitable treatments may include Hair Botox procedures or intensive nourishing routines with Cocochoco hair masks to rebuild strength, elasticity, and shine.

1. Hair Preparation

• Wash the hair 2 times with a clarifying shampoo to open the cuticles and remove all impurities.
• Blow-dry to 70% dry – damp enough to ensure effective absorption of the product.
• If the hair is visibly damaged (e.g., from mid-lengths or on the ends), you may leave those sections slightly more damp (around 50–60% dry) to provide extra moisture retention and reduce potential stress during the process.

2. Product Application

• Divide the hair into 4 sections for better control and precision.
• Apply evenly to thin sections (~1 cm), starting about 0.5–1 cm from the scalp, moving from roots towards ends.
• If the hair is visibly damaged (e.g., from mid-lengths or on the ends), apply slightly less product on those areas to prevent over-saturation and ensure a balanced result.
• Use a fine-tooth comb to remove any excess product and ensure even distribution.

3. Processing Time

• Cover the head with a plastic cap.
• Leave the product on for 30–60 minutes, adjusting the time according to the hair condition and desired straightening effect:
• 30 minutes – for hair that is more damaged, sensitised (e.g., from bleaching or chemical treatments), or when the client prefers a softer, more natural straightening effect rather than completely sleek hair.
• 60 minutes – for thick, coarse, and resistant hair in very good condition, or when the client desires a strong, long-lasting, and very straight result.
• Always evaluate the hair’s health and the client’s expectations before deciding on the exact processing time.

4. Rinsing and Drying

• Rinse the hair thoroughly with lukewarm water, do not shampoo.
• Use a towel to remove the excess product and water. A disposable towel is best, to allow you to see the excess being removed.
• Blow-dry the hair 100%, using a vent brush to prepare it for heat activation.

5. Heat Activation (Flat Ironing)

• Divide the hair again into 4 sections.
• Work with thin, consistent strands (between 0.5cm and 1 cm thick) and ensure each strand fits entirely within the plates of the flat iron — the hair should not slip out during passes. The thicker the hair, the finer the sections you take should be.
• Adjust temperature and number of passes according to both hair type and condition:
• Fine, delicate, or damaged hair – Temperature: 190–210 °C | Passes: 8–10
• Medium-thickness hair in good condition – Temperature: 210–220 °C | Passes: 12–14
• Thick, strong, resistant hair in very good condition – Temperature: 220–230 °C | Passes: 14–16
• Tip: If the hair condition varies along its length (e.g., healthier at the top but more damaged towards the ends), you can adjust your technique:
• Apply a higher temperature or more passes to the healthier sections.
• Reduce temperature or number of passes on the more fragile or damaged sections to prevent overprocessing.
• If you are unsure about the correct temperature or number of passes for a particular hair type, always perform a strand test first to determine the safest and most effective approach.
• Always pass the flat iron smoothly and evenly from root to tip, ensuring the hair is fully straightened, smooth, and free from visible product residue before moving to the next strand.

6. Cooling and Finishing

• After ironing, let the hair cool for 5 minutes.
• Rinse well with warm water. Rinse until you can no longer feel the product in the hair (the product feels a bit waxy – rinse until this feeling fades)
• At this stage, if necessary, the hair may also be washed with shampoo, especially if a significant amount of residue is still felt.
• However, for the best and longest-lasting results, it is recommended to rinse only with lukewarm water, until the product residue is gone
• Apply a nourishing Cocochoco mask. Leave for about 5 minutes, or longer for deeper hydration
• Rinse thoroughly, blow-dry, and style as desired.
• The first full shampoo wash is recommended after 24 hours.

7. Post-Treatment Care

• Avoid washing the hair with shampoo for 24 hours after the treatment to allow the structure and effect to fully set.
• For home care, use: Cocochoco Sulphate-free shampoos and conditioners for regular maintenance, and Cocochoco nourishing masks, light oils, or serums for shine and frizz control.
