How to apply

Detailed Application Instructions

Before You Begin – Important Notes

Cocochoco Onyx should only be applied to hair in good or reasonably healthy condition.
If the hair is severely damaged due to bleaching, excessive lightening, or other harsh chemical treatments, the procedure is not recommended.
In such cases, prioritise a restorative treatment plan before attempting the straightening process. Suitable treatments may include Hair Botox procedures or intensive nourishing routines with Cocochoco hair masks to rebuild strength, elasticity, and shine.

1. Hair Preparation

Wash the hair 2 times with a clarifying shampoo to open the cuticles and remove all impurities.
Blow-dry to 70% dry – damp enough to ensure effective absorption of the product.
If the hair is visibly damaged (e.g., from mid-lengths or on the ends), you may leave those sections slightly more damp (around 50–60% dry) to provide extra moisture retention and reduce potential stress during the process.

2. Product Application

Divide the hair into 4 sections for better control and precision.
Apply evenly to thin sections (~1 cm), starting about 0.5–1 cm from the scalp, moving from roots towards ends.
If the hair is visibly damaged (e.g., from mid-lengths or on the ends), apply slightly less product on those areas to prevent over-saturation and ensure a balanced result.
Use a fine-tooth comb to remove any excess product and ensure even distribution.

3. Processing Time

Cover the head with a plastic cap.
Leave the product on for 30–60 minutes, adjusting the time according to the hair condition and desired straightening effect:
- 30 minutes – for hair that is more damaged, sensitised (e.g., from bleaching or chemical treatments), or when the client prefers a softer, more natural straightening effect rather than completely sleek hair.
- 60 minutes – for thick, coarse, and resistant hair in very good condition, or when the client desires a strong, long-lasting, and very straight result.
Always evaluate the hair’s health and the client’s expectations before deciding on the exact processing time.

4. Rinsing and Drying

Rinse the hair thoroughly with lukewarm water, do not shampoo.
Use a towel to remove the excess product and water. A disposable towel is best, to allow you to see the excess being removed.
Blow-dry the hair 100%, using a vent brush to prepare it for heat activation.

5. Heat Activation (Flat Ironing)

Divide the hair again into 4 sections.
Work with thin, consistent strands (between 0.5cm and 1 cm thick) and ensure each strand fits entirely within the plates of the flat iron — the hair should not slip out during passes. The thicker the hair, the finer the sections you take should be.
Adjust temperature and number of passes according to both hair type and condition:
- Fine, delicate, or damaged hair – Temperature: 190–210 °C | Passes: 8–10
- Medium-thickness hair in good condition – Temperature: 210–220 °C | Passes: 12–14
- Thick, strong, resistant hair in very good condition – Temperature: 220–230 °C | Passes: 14–16
Tip: If the hair condition varies along its length (e.g., healthier at the top but more damaged towards the ends), you can adjust your technique:
- Apply a higher temperature or more passes to the healthier sections.
- Reduce temperature or number of passes on the more fragile or damaged sections to prevent overprocessing.
If you are unsure about the correct temperature or number of passes for a particular hair type, always perform a strand test first to determine the safest and most effective approach.
Always pass the flat iron smoothly and evenly from root to tip, ensuring the hair is fully straightened, smooth, and free from visible product residue before moving to the next strand.

6. Cooling and Finishing

After ironing, let the hair cool for 5 minutes.
Rinse well with warm water. Rinse until you can no longer feel the product in the hair (the product feels a little waxy – rinse until this feeling fades).
At this stage, if necessary, the hair may also be washed with shampoo, especially if a significant amount of residue is still felt.
However, for the best and longest-lasting results, it is recommended to rinse only with lukewarm water, until the product residue is gone.
Apply a nourishing Cocochoco mask. Leave for about 5 minutes, or longer for deeper hydration.
Rinse thoroughly, blow-dry, and style as desired.
The first full shampoo wash is recommended after 24 hours.

7. Post-Treatment Care

Avoid washing the hair with shampoo for 24 hours after the treatment to allow the structure and effect to fully set.
For home care, use:
- Cocochoco Sulphate-free shampoos & conditioners.
- Cocochoco Moisturizing & nourishing masks, light oils, or serum for shine and frizz control.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cocochoco Onyx?

Cocochoco Onyx is an advanced hair treatment designed to deeply nourish, repair, and strengthen hair. It is based on a Glyoxylic Complex, which modifies the hair’s keratin structure to smooth and straighten hair effectively. The formula is free from harsh chemicals like formaldehyde, making it a safe and effective solution for smoother, healthier-looking hair.

On which hair types can Cocochoco Onyx be used?

Cocochoco Onyx is suitable for all hair types, including curly, wavy, straight, and color-treated hair. It can be used on virgin hair, colored hair, and even on African American hair textures. It’s especially beneficial for damaged, dry, or frizzy hair in need of deep hydration and restoration.

What are the benefits of Cocochoco Onyx?

Cocochoco Onyx helps:

Restore moisture and enhance shine
Strengthen hair and reduce breakage
Tame frizz and improve manageability
Maintain a healthy scalp without harmful chemicals

What is the difference between Cocochoco Original and Gold keratin treatments and Cocochoco Onyx?

Cocochoco Original and Gold are traditional keratin treatments designed to straighten and smooth the hair while deeply repairing and adding shine. Keratin works by creating a lamination on the outer layer of the hair. Cocochoco Onyx, on the other hand, is a new-generation treatment based on a Glyoxylic Complex. It modifies the hair’s keratin structure to achieve smoothness and manageability.

Onyx focuses more on deep repair, nourishment, and maintaining natural movement, while still reducing frizz and enhancing shine. This makes it a gentler and more versatile option suitable for all hair types.

How long does the effect of Cocochoco Onyx last?

Results typically last between 3 to 6 months, depending on your hair type and maintenance routine. Using Cocochoco’s sulphate-free shampoos and conditioners can help extend the benefits.

Does Cocochoco Onyx straighten hair?

Cocochoco Onyx is designed to smooth and repair hair, reducing frizz and improving texture. Depending on the application process, amount of passes, temperature used on the straightener, etc, it can provide long lasting straight hair effects, but it is primarily concerned with improving the condition and manageability.

Is Cocochoco Onyx safe for pregnant women and children?

Yes! Cocochoco Onyx is developed with a gentle, innovative formula that makes it suitable for use during pregnancy. As with any cosmetic treatment, we always recommend consulting a doctor before use. We recommend Cocochoco Onyx only from the age of 12 and above, as younger children’s hair and scalp can be more sensitive. In all cases, parental consent and consultation with a doctor are advised before application.

Can I color my hair after using Cocochoco Onyx?

Yes, Cocochoco Onyx is safe for color-treated hair. For the best results, we recommend coloring the hair after the Onyx application, ideally after 3–4 washes, so that any remaining product residues have been washed away to allow for the colour to better penetrate the hair. This helps achieve optimal hair health and ensures better, longer-lasting color results.

How should I maintain my hair after using Cocochoco Onyx?

To keep your hair looking its best, use Cocochoco’s sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner range, avoid excessive heat styling, and incorporate a deep-conditioning mask into your routine. For blonde and bleached hair, we recommend using the Cocochoco Anti Yellow Mask regularly after the application to help maintain a bright, fresh tone and reduce yellowing.

Can Cocochoco Onyx be applied to virgin hair?

Yes! Cocochoco Onyx is perfect for virgin hair as it helps enhance natural shine, strengthen strands, and improve manageability without altering the natural hair structure.

Can Cocochoco Onyx be applied to very damaged or highlighted hair?

If the hair is severely/heavily damaged due to bleaching, excessive lightening, or other harsh chemical treatments, the procedure is not recommended, as the hair may not withstand the level of heat or the number of passes required to activate the product. It is not the product itself that may cause further damage, but rather the application process. However, Cocochoco Onyx is specifically designed to restore and strengthen compromised hair, including highlighted hair.

Its advanced formula helps repair split ends, strengthen hair, reduce breakage, deeply nourish strands, and improve overall shine and resilience. It also helps restore moisture and reduce frizz. For highlighted hair, we recommend applying the treatment at least a few days before or after highlighting to maintain hair health and vibrancy – it is not recommended to do a bleach or color service on the same day as Onyx.

Can Cocochoco Onyx change the color of the hair?

Yes, Cocochoco Onyx may slightly lighten the hair by up to half a tone, especially on color-treated hair. This is a normal effect caused by the smoothing and nourishing ingredients in the formula which are of an acidic pH. To help prevent unwanted lightening, we recommend doing the treatment with a professional hairdresser and using the Cocochoco Anti Yellow Hair Mask immediately after the treatment and regularly afterward to maintain a balanced, vibrant tone.

The Cocochoco Colour Protect shampoo & conditioner can also be incorporated into your routine to ensure best colour maintenance. Colour can also be re-done if needed after at least 3-4 washes of the hair.

Can Cocochoco Onyx be applied to hair extensions?

Yes, Cocochoco Onyx can be applied to hair extensions, as long as they are made from natural, human hair. For best results, we recommend treating the extensions before attaching them to your own hair. We also recommend to always treat extensions and your own hair separately, and allow the hair to be washed at least once before refitting extensions.

Can I go to the pool or the sea after using Cocochoco Onyx?

Yes! You can definitely enjoy swimming in the pool or the sea after the treatment. It does not harm or affect the results of the treatment in any way.

Is Cocochoco Onyx considered a keratin treatment, a nanoplasty, or a mineral treatment?

Cocochoco Onyx is officially classified as a mineral treatment. However, based on its ingredient profile, it sits somewhere between nanoplasty and mineral therapy. It offers both internal hair restructuring and deep nourishment, but with a gentler, more cosmetic effect than traditional nanoplasty treatments.

Is Cocochoco Onyx a vegan hair treatment?

Yes, all the ingredients in Cocochoco Onyx are plant-based, making it a vegan-friendly hair treatment.
