At Cocochoco, we are asked a lot of questions about our treatments, products, and how your hair should be cared for after you have your Cocochoco treatment. In this post, we want to answer some of those questions!
What is Cocochoco Keratin treatment?
Our Keratin treatments is a smoothing treatment which aims to restore and restructure the hair by infusing a special blend of hydrolyzed keratin deep into the cuticle. The hydrolyzed keratin is bonded to the cuticle with heat from a straightener to relax the hair’s subcuticle layer, resulting in renewed smoothness and shine. In other words, the treatment uses the hair’s natural protein, keratin, to fill in gaps in the hair fibres in order to eliminate frizziness or harshness from the hair shaft. It is then sealed with a straightener to give you smooth, sleek hair with naturally derived ingredients.
There are three types of Keratin treatment available – Cocochoco Original, Cocochoco Pure and Cocochoco Gold. Each of these products has been formulated for different hair types, so you are sure to find the best treatment for your hair type. For information on which treatment is best for your hair type, check out our blog post which outlines the differences between treatments.
What results can be expected after the Keratin Treatment?
With correct maintenance, the hair will be straight, more manageable and easy to style, and will be resistant to humidity. It will feel noticeably softer and silkier, with added life and shine.
Can the treatments be done on chemically treated, relaxed or straightened hair?
Yes! In fact, the Keratin treatments work to repair the damage caused by chemical treatments. We recommend that you wait at least two weeks after having any chemical services before you do a Cocochoco treatment.
Can I colour or highlight my hair before / after the treatment?
Yes! You can colour your hair 2 weeks before or 2 weeks after the treatment. For best results, we recommend that any bleach / lightening / highlighting is done on your hair hair 2 weeks before your Cocochoco treatment, as Cocochoco will help to showcase the brightness of your hair colour. Darker colours or dyes should be done on your hair 2 weeks after the Cocochoco treatment, as you may lose some of the richer tones through the heat of the straightening.
Should the hair be cut before or after the treatment?
We recommend that the hair be cut after the treatment, as the hair will have a smoother texture and will lie differently.
How often can the Keratin Smoothing Treatment be performed?
We recommend waiting 5 weeks before having the treatment re-done. But, most of our clients do not need to have it done for at least 12 weeks, as the results can last this long (and even longer!) if the treatment is properly maintained.
How can I care for my hair in the first 72 hours after the treatment?
As you will have been told by your stylist in the consultation, caring for your hair properly in the first 72 hours is critical to ensure your treatment is effective.
Firstly, you must not get your hair wet or damp in the first 72 hours. This is because the Keratin treatment is still settling into your hair, and can easily be disrupted by too much moisture. If your hair does get wet in the first 72 hours, we recommend immediately blow drying it, and straightening your hair again on a medium heat.
Next, you should not bend, crease or tie up your hair for the first 72 hours. Again, the treatment is still settling, so your hair needs to be kept as straight as possible for this time. Try not to push your hair behind your ears at this time either, as this can result in the hair maintaining this bend.
How can I care for my hair after the treatment?
After the first 72 hours, you are free to wash and style your hair as normal. The only difference being, that you need to use hair care products that do not contain SLS or Silicone. Both of these ingredients cause the treatment to be washed away much more quickly than you would like. This is why Cocochoco has created its own range of aftercare products! Cocochoco has designed a range of shampoos, conditioners, hair masks, serums and creams to support your keratin (and Hair Botox) treatments! These products are SLS and Silicone free, so they will not damage your treated hair. They are also highly concentrated, so you will not use them as quickly as you would use a normal shampoo. Less is more with Cocochoco! SLS is an ingredient which encourages products to lather, so you will notice that our products do not lather as intensely as other products. This does not mean you need to use more product. For more information on our aftercare products, take a look at our blog post.
Can this treatment be done on children?
Yes, but it is only recommended that this is done on children aged 14 and older.
Can this treatment be done on pregnant / breastfeeding women?
The manufacturer of the product does not advise that this treatment be done on pregnant or breastfeeding women. This advice applies to both the client and the stylist.
Can this treatment be performed on hair extensions?
It is not recommended that the treatment is performed on extensions while they are attached to the hair, because the extensions may be a different structure than that of the clients. Therefore the products and treatment that suits the client best may not be appropriate for the extensions. If you do want to treat your extensions, we recommend treating them separately to your own hair. After 72 hours, both your hair and the extensions can be washed and clipped back into your hair as normal. Please note that this treatment should only be performed on human hair extensions, wigs or weaves, and not on synthetic hair.
